Sturgeon Lake

On Friday July 24th, 20 sailors from Kingston headed up to cottage country with tents and bugs spray to compete in Mid Ontario regatta at Sturgeon Lake.  The conditions on the weekend favoured the Kingston sailors as we had wind building throughout the day on both days and peaking at about 17knts on both days.  However because of the small lake the conditions were very shifty making it hard to sail consistent.  The regatta was very well attended with 175 sailors in total competing in three classes.  In the 420 class, Jacie deHoop and Max Turner represented Kingston well by finishing 16th of 40 boats and scoring a 4th as their best race.

The laser radial class was a very strong fleet this regatta with 54 boats.  Elite team member Sam Rae sailed very consistent regatta and was the top finisher in 7th place overall and 3rd girl with her best race as a 4th. Next was Charlotte Skinner in 9th place and scouring a 6th as her best race.  Jeremy Clark finished 11th overall and top Junior with her best race a 5th.  Hugh Macrae finished 19th overall and 3rd junior with his best race a 16th showing that he had what it takes to keep up with the heavier kids in the windy conditions.  Little Violet Strafford also showed that she could also keep up in the breeze finishing 25th overall and scouring a 15th as her best race.  Ryan Sousa finished 31st and scouring a 16th as his best race.   Richard Millson sailed a very consistent regatta finishing 39th overall with a 32 as his best race.

In the Laser class past race team member and now Canadian Youth team member Robert Davis won the event by sailing a very strong and consistent event, well done Robert. Next was elite team coach Vaughn Harrison in second.  Elite team member Tom Ramsaw finished 8th with his best race being a 3rd.  Then from 10th to 14th were all Kingston boats, in 10th was past race team member Tyler Woodbury then in 11th we had elite team member Justin Norton scouring a 5th as his best result.  Next in line was Matt “cutie” Ryder in 12th with his best result a 9th.  Matt Gilbert another past race team member finished 13th overall even though he suffered a break down in the7th race.  In 14th place and top junior was elite team member Ian Hill with a 6th as his best race.  In 23rd was elite team member Matt “Sully’ Sullivan with his best race an 11th.

Well done to all the sailors, I had a great time coaching and watching the racing.  Thanks to all the chaperones for driving us out there and making sure the sailors had what they needed off the water.

29er Canadians and Clinic

July 23-26 2009

This past weekend the Kingston Yacht Club hosted a successful event. 26 boats made the trip here to compete in the 29er Canadians.Thursday and Friday was a clinic run by Chris Hewson and Danielle Boyd. Three Kingston boats, three Burlington boats, and the Stokes brothers from Virginia took part. The wind made for great training leading up to the event.Super slaloms downwind tested the sailors angles, and high winds on Friday made for fun practice starts to prepare.

Saturday morning was windy and the sailors got excited for a traditional windy day in Kingston. However with the late start the wind died fast before the first race. Everyone's tension was wrong and sailors got frustrated. However even with the shifty wind and pressure changes the Race Commitee got off a successful six races. The Kingston boats struggled in the lighter winds. Rachel and Ellie had a decent day with a 12, 7, 11, 7, 10 and 12. They had work to do to get into the top ten. Joel and Matt were very frustrated with there finishes, but still sailed really well. They finished with: 16, 29, 17, 13, 14 and 17. Freddy and Aidian sailed well in there first big and challenging fleet. There finishes were: 24,13,15,23, 26 and 19.

Sunday the wind was strong again first thing in the morning. The Kingston teams took off in the wind following Danielle and Emily upwind in the 17-20 knot winds. The Race Committee got 4 races off very quickly to have the fleeti n and packing by 2:30pm. Rachael and Ellie had a much better day beating the coach in the first race with a 4th. They also had a 7,9 and 3rd. Joel and Matt also had an awesome day. Theyt were in the top five around the first windward in every race. THere finishes were: 11,11,7,and 7. Freddy and Aidan enjoyed the breeze too. They finished with a 16,16,26,and 18.

Mike Blumer and Peter Soosalu from RCYC and BYC won the regatta. Ted Murphy and Alex Scales from RNSYS had a rewarding journey from Halifax to finish in second. Emily Hill and Danielle Boyd (RHYC/KYC) finished in third.

The fleet would like to thank KYC and Jeff Boyd for running an amazing event. Congratulations to all competitors!
